I ran into this from Daisy Quilts and oh what a fun idea. I love my story because it takes me back to a much simpler time. I had always been a crafter in some way or another. When my daughter was 6, 16 long years ago, I was making stuffed animals for her and her brother, then 2. In the fluff package was a pattern for a quilt. I thought, okay, why not. So I bought fabric, made little card board templates (that I didn't know were called templates) no ruler, just regular old paper scissors, pencil markings that I'm sure were not exact and cut the fabric, stitched it up and wa la. I'd made a quilt. I was so thrilled that I could make little "blankets" for my little people. I didn't know a thing about quilting, but read the instructions well and made the entire thing myself. I was so proud and thrilled at the smile on my daughters face. I met a quilter years later and she was shocked when I showed her my very first quilt. Now I look back and think if I'd have know what I was doing I'd never would tried it thinking it was to hard. Who works with HST when they have no idea what they are doing?? Well big and bold as I was, I did. It's not a bad first effort considering I had no idea about 1/4" seams, how important the cutting was and surprisingly I've only found one pucker in the final project. I made a much similar quilt for my son, still didn't realize how to be simple. I left off the star points but I followed the same pattern. I'd only left out the stars because it was a bit much with sport themed fabric in my mind but used the square card board. I still have both of those quilts, in my hutch for safe keeping for maybe some day a grand-girl and a grand-boy. Here it is, don't look to close at the points, but isn't it lovely.....

Thank you for walking down that memory road with me. Stop and see Robyn and answer her question for yourself "What started us on this wonderful endless journey??"<
Kat, what a fantastic first quilt!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it soooo good that we didn't know when we were starting out :D
I agree with you ...this is so interesting to see where everyone began!
It's so awesome to look back and see where we came from from...and what we have accomplished so far.
I do hope you're getting some sewing / quilting done in your 365 challenge.
Thanks for sharing,
